The scientific name of the tiger is panthera tigris. The tiger is the biggest cat of the 40 Big cats, his "family". The entire name of the tiger is: Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Felidae Panthera Tigris. or Animals, Chorda Animals, Mammals, Carnivores, Big cats, Panthera Tigris. The tiger is subdivided into 8 subspecies. There are not many differences between the subspecies, size being perhaps most obvious. Their formal names consist of panthera tigris + another Latin name which is different with each subspecies. 5 of 8 subspecies still live on this planet, 3 are extinct.

The Bengal tiger or panthera tigris exist mainly in South-East Asia (India, Bangladesh, Vietnam ...)
The Sumatran tiger or panthera tigris sumatrae lives in Sumatra.
The Indochinese tiger or panthera tigris corbetti exist mainly in South-East Asia nad between East-India an South-West China.
The South China tiger or panthera tigris jacksoni used to flourish there, but is now almost extinct. and

The Kaspian tiger or panthera tigris virgata flourished around the Kaspian Sea.
The Javan tiger or panthera tigris sondaica lived on the island Java.
The Balinese tiger or panthera tigris baltaica walked around on the island Bali.
